When I was young my parents owned a big theater with a restaurant.
This was amazing because I got to see and help out backstage for a lot of shows. Meeting artists, setting up the lights, assisting the people of the circus where I could feed the tigers
(don’t worry, I still got all of my limbs).
And every day when I got home from school I would talk a bit to my mother who was busy in the kitchen preparing some 5 course meal for a big company that was meeting at our place.
Now unbeknown to me at the time, I was trained to have a 6th sense for a few things and it is making a massive difference for me now.
Timeskip to the light going on upstairs
Years later, when I lived on my own, I found myself in the kitchen for the very first time and the strangest thing happened.
I knew how to hold and cut perfectly with a kitchen knife, I knew what spices to use and how to sear the steak.
I was like Neo from the matrix. Only now instead of KungFu I downloaded a tutorial for cooking.
All those years that I saw my mother cooking, I subconsciously picked up 100 things about preparing food.
Do you notice?
We go through life on a daily basis as blind as a bat. We get our coffee at the local shop, we get our sandwich, new clothes, a check up with the doctor and it’s like we’re on autopilot.
We’re missing everything because when you actually pay attention, you see the opportunities, problems and most of all…where the money flows.
Like Spiderman when he is in danger and his body screams to react, you can train yourself to pay attention and get a 6th sense for money and it is easier than you think.
How!?
Start small with a simple visit to the coffeeshop.
What is the name and how does the front of the store look like?
Is there a sign outside and what is written on it?
How is the setup inside?
Packed with tables, a bar or plenty of space?
How does the staff react to customers?
Are they trained well?
The list can go on and on but once you've done this a couple of times in different places, you will see.
A very wise man once told me, “In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king”.
You don’t have to be a specialist in interior design or study color theory. You just have to know enough so you can see, even with one eye.
You instantly learn to recognise opportunities to help other businesses.
If you’re a copywriter:
How to improve their sign or re-write their website.
If you’re a marketer:
What are their USP’s and how to use them in an ad, an email newsletter to get attention and traffic to their website or shop.
If you’re a business owner:
What is your competition doing right or wrong?
This 6th sense will help you massively in every business because it gives you a clear direction to where the money flows and if you know that, you also know where to scoop it up.
